Food without Footprint

Climate Change becomes more and more prominent and cannot be ignored anymore. Royal Kaak makes a substantial contribution to combatting climate change and to reducing CO2 emissions in the bakery chain. Our vision for the future is Food without Footprint and we are aiming for integrated production lines that do not leave any ecological footprint. This vision is not new, it has guided our main choices of the last 10 years, like our investments in 3D metal printing and iBakeCare, and it will continue to guide our choices for the future.

Our ambition

Royal Kaak’s vision for the future is Food without Footprint. In the coming years we will further develop our solutions with the goal of offering an integrated line that enables the production of CO2 neutral bread by 2030. As a next step by 2050, Royal Kaak wants to achieve net zero carbon emissions in the entire value chain. To realize Food without any Footprint.

Reduce Energy

Energy consumption is the main driver of CO2 emissions of bakeries. Reducing energy is therefore high on the agenda of most bakeries, and with our extensive experience with bakeries around the world Royal Kaak is your ideal partner to reduce your energy consumption.

The oven typically is the largest energy consumer in the production line. Therefore, we’ve developed an Oven scan to quickly assess the energy savings potential of your oven. Do you want to go a level deeper? In that case we can also execute an end-to-end energy assessment and analyze the energy consumption of each piece of equipment in the line in detail. Based on the findings, we will provide various recommendations ranging from behavioral changes to line modifications that will lower your energy consumption.

Food Waste

One third of all food that is produced for human consumption worldwide lost or wasted, and 60% of this waste is considered avoidable. Bread is one of the largest categories of food waste and in the Netherlands alone, an equivalent of 700.000 loafs is not consumed every day.

Reducing food waste is a big challenge for the bakery industry, but when addressed successfully this acts as a double-edged sword; bakeries do not only reduce their direct emissions, but also the indirect emissions at farm level by requiring less ingredients for the same amount of bread to be consumed.

Royal Kaak can help bakeries with reducing food waste by optimizing their bakery processes, and with recycling it into new, fresh food products.

Water Use

Water is an important ingredient for bread, and good water quality is crucial for bakeries.

With climate change, “water stress” is becoming an increasingly important topic. Changes in rainfall and higher average temperatures will make access to sufficient quality water increasingly difficult and will make water more expensive. Consequently, bakeries will have to become mindful of their water consumption.

Royal Kaak can help bakeries reducing their use of water in the bakery process, for instance for cleaning. We have various innovative solutions in development for cleaning your bakeware without water.
